Enigma2 receivers,
an overview.
Enigma2 boxes are Linux receivers for satellite, cable and terrestrial TV with an open-source interface. Here is what they are, who makes them and what to look for – especially if you want to watch on Apple TV with EnigmaTV.
What is Enigma2?
Enigma2 is the open-source TV software of Linux-based DVB receivers: tuning, TV guide, recordings, timeshift and plugins, all operated with the remote. It was developed by Dream Multimedia for the Dreambox and released as open source in 2006; since then many manufacturers and around twenty community teams have built on it.
The software is distributed as images – complete systems you flash onto the receiver. The same box can usually run several images.
What is OpenWebif?
OpenWebif is the web interface and HTTP API that runs on the receiver. It serves a browser interface and a JSON/XML API (port 80) for channels, the TV guide, recordings and timers, and live streams via the Enigma2 stream server (port 8001). It is part of almost every current image – and it is what EnigmaTV uses to talk to your receiver.
Community images
Images are maintained by enthusiast teams. Pick a receiver that the big images support – it keeps the box useful for years.

What to look for
The right tuner
DVB-S2X is today's satellite standard. For cable or terrestrial TV choose a DVB-C/T2 or a combo box. Boxes with plug-in tuner slots can be changed later.
Enough tuners for every screen
Each Apple TV watching live TV uses a tuner (or a demodulator of an FBC tuner). An FBC tuner offers up to eight – ideal for several rooms plus recordings. Different satellite polarisations or bands may need Unicable or extra cables.
4K or HD
4K/HEVC boxes cost only a little more, decode UHD channels and are noticeably faster. An HD box is fine for HD channels on a budget.
Wired network
Streaming sends the full broadcast stream over your network. Connect the receiver by Ethernet; 100 Mbit/s is enough for several HD streams, gigabit helps with UHD and copying recordings.
Storage for recordings
Recordings need a USB drive, an internal 2.5" bay or an M.2 slot – or a network share. EnigmaTV's timeshift buffer is kept on Apple TV, not on the receiver.
Image support
Choose a model supported by OpenATV, OpenPLi, OpenViX or OpenBH. Image teams periodically drop old boxes with little memory.
Pay-TV modules
For encrypted channels, check for a CI slot (two for two decrypted channels) and confirm that your provider's module works in an Enigma2 receiver – CI+ modules are sometimes restricted to certified devices.
Standby
In deep standby a receiver cannot stream. Keep it on or in normal standby when you want to watch on Apple TV.
Using a receiver with EnigmaTV
- OpenWebif must be installed – it is by default on almost every image.
- The receiver and Apple TV must be on the same local network. EnigmaTV finds the receiver automatically.
- Live TV comes from the receiver's stream server on port 8001. If Require authentication for http streams is enabled on the receiver, enter the receiver's user name and password in EnigmaTV.
- Transcoding (port 8002) is only available on receivers with a hardware transcoder and is not needed on a good home network.
